Our Thai Buddhism Program offers a transformative cultural and spiritual experience, providing you with the opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich traditions of Thai Buddhism. Set in a serene temple environment, this program invites you to engage in the daily lives of Buddhist monks, learn about their spiritual practices, and cultivate mindfulness through meditation. Whether you are a beginner or have prior meditation experience, the program is tailored to guide you on a meaningful journey of self-discovery and cultural appreciation.

Under the guidance of experienced monks and with the support of a dedicated coordinator, you will learn Buddhist principles, meditation techniques, and temple ethics. Daily routines include chanting, meditation, almsgiving, and assisting with temple chores, offering an authentic glimpse into the simplicity and tranquility of monastic life.

Accommodations at the monastery are intentionally modest, encouraging you to embrace minimalism and focus on personal and spiritual growth.

Your Role

  • Assist monks with chores such as cleaning the temple and maintaining the surrounding areas.
  • Participate in sessions on Buddhist teachings, ethics, and meditation techniques.
  • Engage in guided meditation sessions, focusing on mindfulness and posture.
  • Interact with monks and fellow participants to share insights and build cross-cultural connections.
  • Join monks in their almsgiving routines, experiencing a pivotal part of Thai Buddhist culture.

Standard Shared Accommodation (4-8 pax) 

3 meals per day during weekdays and 2 meals per day during weekends

Pick up upon your arrival during the regular pick-up time (Sunday 08:00-16:00) and transportation during the program as per the scheduled activities

To volunteer with this program, there is a minimum duration requirement of 1 week.

 

This volunteer program runs all year round and starts every Monday. However, we recommend arriving on the Sunday to check into your accommodation and prepare for your program to start the following morning.

 

Please note that program start dates could be affected by local holidays. However, we will give you as much notice as possible if any days of your program may overlap with holidays.

What are the requirements to take part in this program?

Program Requirements:

  • Age limit: 18-65
  • Minimum basic level of English
  • Proof of DBS check required
  • Proof of travel insurance required
  • Copy of passport required
  • Willingness to learn about and respect Thai Buddhist practices and traditions.
  • Adherence to temple etiquette, including dressing modestly, removing shoes before entering sacred areas, and behaving respectfully.

What is my working schedule?

Monday

  • Introduction to Buddhism; Learn about meditation and Buddhist ethics (how to pray and kneel, how to act around monks, etc).
  • Watch a documentary about Buddha & Buddhism.

Tuesday to Friday

  • Visit several temples
  • Join morning and afternoon chanting and rituals at the temple (Morning offering and chanting can be from 4AM onwards and afternoon chanting can be from 5PM onwards)
  • Join monk chat sessions to learn about Buddhism (group monk chat session and individual monk chat session)
  • Guided meditation sessions and daily self-meditation practices.
  • Temple Cleaning
  • Offering and getting blessings from Buddhist Monks.

What's the accommodation like?

During your stay in Chiang Mai you will be staying in a nice accommodation with all the standard facilities like WiFi, hot showers and fans.

 

We have an open and breathtaking lakeside and there is also a beautiful dining area where you can have a coffee while having a chat with others. You can also spend your time playing table tennis as it is available in the centre.

 

Rooms are shared between 4-8 other volunteers. Private rooms may be available depending on availability. 

What meals are included?

All the meals served in the accommodation are homestyle and vegetarian-friendly. You can expect typical Thai dishes, including plenty of rice or noodle dishes with vegetables. Occasionally, meat and fish will be served, and we also serve seasonal fruits for dessert. 3 meals per day on weekdays are included and 2 meals per day on weekends. 

What can I do in my free time?

Chiang Mai is a city rich in cultural heritage and natural beauty, offering a wide range of sights and surroundings to explore. Here are some highlights:

  1. Old City: The historic heart of Chiang Mai, the Old City is surrounded by ancient walls and moats. It is home to numerous temples (wats), including Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang, showcasing exquisite Lanna architecture.
  2. Doi Suthep: A must-visit attraction, Doi Suthep is a mountain located just outside the city. Climb the 309 steps to reach Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, a revered temple offering panoramic views of Chiang Mai.
  3. Night Bazaar: Experience the vibrant atmosphere of Chiang Mai's Night Bazaar, where you can shop for handicrafts, clothing, artwork, and sample delicious street food. Bargaining is part of the fun here!
  4. Sunday Walking Street: On Sunday evenings, the streets of the Old City transform into a bustling market. Explore the Sunday Walking Street, where you can find local crafts, traditional performances, and delectable street food.
  5. Doi Inthanon National Park: Located southwest of Chiang Mai, Doi Inthanon is Thailand's highest peak. Explore the park's lush forests, stunning waterfalls, and visit the Royal Twin Pagodas, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.
  6. Art and Cultural Centers: Chiang Mai is renowned for its arts and crafts. Visit the Baan Kang Wat artist village, the Chiang Mai City Arts & Cultural Center, and various galleries to discover local artwork, traditional crafts, and learn about the city's cultural heritage.
  7. Mae Sa Valley: Just outside Chiang Mai, the Mae Sa Valley is a picturesque area with stunning landscapes, waterfalls, and outdoor activities such as zip-lining, ATV rides, and jungle trekking.
  8. Doi Pui Tribal Village: Located on Doi Suthep, Doi Pui is a Hmong tribal village offering insights into the local hill tribe culture. Explore the village's traditional houses, handicrafts, and enjoy scenic views of the surrounding hills.

Along the route, but not at all times, there are ATMs and small local stores. Please make sure you have enough money with you before starting the trip.

What to Bring

  • Modest Attire: Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that covers shoulders and knees (e.g. long skirts, loose pants, and sleeved tops).
  • White Clothing: Recommended for meditation sessions to align with traditional practices (not mandatory).
  • Comfortable Footwear: Slip-on shoes or sandals for easy removal when entering the temple.
  • Light Sweater or Jacket: For early mornings and evenings.
  • Rain Gear: Poncho or umbrella, especially during the rainy season.

Airport Pickup

An airport pick up is included on Sundays between 08:00-16:00. An additional cost will be added if arriving outside of the scheduled pick up time, so we recommend booking your flights to arrive on the Sunday. If you require a different pick up time or day, please let us know.

 

Pick up is at CNX (Chiang Mai) Airport, Level 1, Door 5. You need at least 1 hr (for immigration and customs) from the time you land until you get to the meeting point. Please plan accordingly.

 

If you are already in Chiang Mai, you can meet us at CNX (Chiang Mai) Airport at 14:00 on Sunday. Additionally, you can make your own way to us with the accommodation location details sent upon booking confirmation. If you plan to make your own way, please let us know.
