Our Dentistry Internship Program in Sri Lanka offers an engaging and practical learning experience for dental students and aspiring oral health professionals. This program is designed to provide participants with clinical exposure, hands-on practice, and insight into the dental healthcare system in Sri Lanka. Interns will shadow experienced dental surgeons and assist in a variety of dental procedures, gaining valuable knowledge in patient care, preventive dentistry, and specialied treatments in both urban and community clinic settings.

 

Program Highlights:
1. Clinical Shadowing: Interns will observe and assist licensed dental professionals during clinical sessions at hospitals and dental clinics. This includes patient consultations, diagnostic procedures, and routine dental treatments.


2. Basic Dental Procedures: Under supervision, interns may assist in tasks such as chairside support, dental charting, instrument sterilization, and preparation of materials for fillings, extractions, and cleanings.


3. Preventive Oral Health Programs: Participate in school-based and community outreach programs focusing on oral hygiene education, dental screenings, and preventive care strategies aimed at improving public oral health.


4. Specialty Clinic Exposure: Interns will have the opportunity to observe a range of dental specialties including pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, oral surgery, and prosthodontics, depending on clinic schedules and case availability.

 

Responsibilities:
1. Chairside Assistance: Support dental surgeons during examinations and procedures by preparing instruments, handling suction equipment, and maintaining a sterile environment.


2. Patient Education: Provide guidance on oral hygiene practices, dietary advice, and post-treatment care to patients during outreach sessions and in-clinic interactions.


3. Record Keeping: Assist in maintaining patient records, documenting dental histories, treatment plans, and progress notes in line with clinic protocols.


4. Community Engagement: Take part in public dental health initiatives by delivering awareness talks, distributing educational materials, and participating in mobile dental clinics when available.

Start Dates & Minimum Duration

This Internship program runs all year round and starts every Monday. However, we recommend arriving on the Sunday to check into your accommodation and prepare for your program to start the following morning.

 

Please note that program start dates could be affected by local holidays. However, we will give you as much notice as possible if any days of your program may overlap with holidays.

 

The minimum duration of this Internship is 1 week.

What are the requirements to take part in this program?

Internship Requirements:

  • Age limit: 18-65
  • Proof of DBS check required
  • Proof of travel insurance required
  • Passport copy required
  • Copy of Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Academic qualifications in the field
  • An established background in an affiliated field of study

Internships may require an interview with either the local team or our team at Gateway Go Travel.

Working Hours

This program runs for a minimum of 1 week, starting on a Monday. You will work for around 4-5 hours per day / 20-25 hours per week.

Accommodation Details

You will stay in a beautiful homestay in Watalla, shared with up to 3 other participants.

3 meals per day are included in your program, and there's also lots of restaurants around to visit if you fancy a change!

What can I do in my free time?

There are lots of amazing sites to see around Colombo, including the Lotus Tower, Pettah Markets, Port City (water sports, shopping, restaurants), Mount Lavinia beach, Galle Face Green, Independence Square, Gangaramaya Temple, Red Mosque and lots more!

 

Local transport is easily accessible from Colombo, so you can also take trips to other parts of Sri Lanka during your free time. At the weekend, we recommend hopping on a 2 hour train ride to the south of Sri Lanka to explore the stunning beach towns. (Ps. the views of the coastline on this train ride are beautiful!)

Airport Pickup

An airport pick up is included in your program fee, please let us know your arrival date, time and flight number, so that we can arrange to be there for your arrival. The drive from the airport to Watalla/Colombo can take around 45 minutes.

 

Transport between your accommodation and the volunteer site is not included. Local transport in Colombo is super easy to arrange yourself, or our local team will be happy to assist you with this.
