ITINERARY

Day 1: Hello Tokyo

Your Japan and South Korea Adventure tour starts today! You’ll meet your group in the afternoon, where you’ll get a briefing from your Adventure Leader. They’ll outline what the next two weeks hold for you, as well as providing you with key tips on adapting to the local culture and staying safe whilst on tour. 

After that, it’s time to make your own dinner as we take you for your first unmissable activity – a sushi-making class! You’ll learn how to make staple dishes, and then sample your culinary creations for dinner. 

It’s then time to get the best views of the skyline in the city, with a trip to the top of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, before you can opt to join your group at a local bar. Relax, and get to know your group – you might just meet your new best friends! 

Day 2: Markets, Temples & Arcades

We’ll start the morning with a visit to the Tsukiji Outer Market, the iconic district that’s renowned as one of the best places to try sushi thanks to their deliveries of fresh fish. Explore the stalls, and treat yourself to some sashimi along the way!  

Next, we’re heading to the Asakusa district, where we’ll visit the iconic Sensoji Temple. This historic Buddhist temple is known for its vibrant, bustling atmosphere and traditional Nakamise-dori street. If you’re still hungry, be sure to grab a couple of local snacks! 

You’ve then got some time to explore Asakusa under your own steam: 

  • If you’d like, you can opt to join us for an amazing Sumo experience. This is a rare opportunity where you can meet ex-Sumo wrestlers, and enjoy a traditional chanko nabe lunch.  
  • You might want to grab another view of Tokyo from the Tokyo SKYTREE® tower, where you’ll get amazing panoramas all over the city.  
  • For a very different look at the city, why not opt to take a cruise down the Sumida River? 
  • For a fascinating glimpse into Japanese history, pay a visit to the Samurai Museum.  

After meeting back up with your group, you’ll head to Akihabara – Japan’s ‘Electric Town’. It’s a bustling district, renowned for its vibrant stores and arcades, and is a haven for anime and manga lovers. While you’re here, you can opt to get a picture-perfect experience with a visit to one of the district’s famous maid cafés.  

The rest of the day is then yours to explore Tokyo as you wish. If you’re a shopping fan, head to Ginza, where you’ll find boutiques and luxury brands galore. If you’re looking for a bit of action, you can choose to visit a staple of Japanese culture – the batting cages! Or, if you’d prefer to relax, why not take a visit to a Japanese bathhouse? 

Day 3: Meiji Shrine & Tokyo City

This morning, we’re up early to visit one of the most famous sites in the city – the Meiji Shrine! After this, we’ll head to Harajuku – in Tokyo’s number one fashion district, where anything goes! Here, we’ll spend some time exploring everything the bustling streets have to offer, from secondhand shops like Chicago to famous restaurants. We’ll then head to the world’s busiest pedestrian crossing – Shibuya! It’s one of the most famous sights in the entire city, with millions of people crossing here every day.  

You’ll spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the city at your own leisure: 

  • For an experience like any other, you can take to the streets of Tokyo and go Kartoon Karting! Grab your go-kart, and off you go! 
  • One of the hottest attractions in Tokyo is teamLab Planets – a huge art gallery made up of immersive installations that combine the natural world with the digital age.   
  • For a slower pace, explore the serene gardens and historical grounds of the Imperial Palace, the residence of the Japanese Emperor.  

Day 4: Fuji Views

Today, we’re up bright and early to take you on an incredible day trip out to Fujikawaguchiko, putting you within a stone’s throw of the majestic Mount Fuji. On your trip, you’ll explore this amazing area, including: 

  • A visit to Arakurayama Sengen Park, a serene and picturesque shrine nestled in the foothills of Fuji.  
  • A short hike to Tenku no Torii (the Torii Gate by the Sky), where you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Fuji on clear days. This iconic gate offers a perfect spot for photos with the mountain as your backdrop. 
  • A hike to Haha no Shirataki (Mother White’s Waterfall). This charming spot offers even more glimpses of Fuji, so spend some time exploring this beautiful natural location. 

In the evening, you’ll head back into Tokyo for your final night in the city. If you’d like an earlier night you can turn in, but you can opt to head out with your group for some drinks ahead of your departure.  

Day 5: Kamakura Beach Town 

You’re swapping the bustling streets for the sandy beaches of Kamakura, as you’ll hop on a train this morning, arriving around lunchtime. After grabbing yourself a bite, you and your group will head to a truly unmissable cultural experience – a calligraphy class inside a local temple! 

The rest of the day is then yours to explore Kamakura. This chilled out beach town is packed full of great vibes and sights to see, such as: 

  • Kotoku-in Temple, where you can visit the iconic Great Buddha Statue – a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  
  • Houkokuji Temple, which is a short bus ride away but boasts a stunning bamboo forest.  
  • If you’re a beach fan, you might opt for a relaxing afternoon on the scenic beaches, where you can spot a stunning sunset over the ocean.  

Day 6: Kamakura to Hakone

We’ll depart Kamakura and head into the stunning Hakone this morning, arriving just before midday – in time to hike along the Old Tokaido route to enjoy lunch near Moto-Hakone.  

Afterwards, climb aboard a sightseeing cruise with a twist – it’s a pirate ship! From the deck of this man-of-war, you’ll cross Lake Ashi’s clear blue waters and, on a cloudless day, grab unforgettable views of Fuji. We’ll then take the Hakone ropeway to Owakudani, an active volcano zone where you can try black eggs – they’re a local delicacy that are rumoured to extend your life by seven years!  

For some traditional relaxation, spend an evening soaking in the sulfuric water of a traditional Japanese onsen, before changing into your yukata and getting ready to learn about the art of Japanese rice wine. We all know that the best way to learn is by doing – so the sake soireé with your group should make sure you leave knowledgeable!    

Day 7: Hakone to Kyoto

All aboard – we’re off to Kyoto! We’re changing in Odawara mid-morning, where you’ll have a couple of hours free time to explore before we grab the bullet train to Kyoto.  

Once we’re there, your Adventure Leader will take you on a short orientation walk alongside the picturesque Kamo River, giving you a chance to find your feet. After that, the afternoon is yours to spend exploring. You might: 

  • Explore the historic Higashi Hongan-ji temple, known for its impressive architecture.  
  • Stroll through the beautiful Shosei-en Gardens, famous for its seasonal flowers and peaceful setting.  
  • Visit the stunning Sanjusangendo temple, renowned for a hall filled with 1,001 statues of Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy.  
  • Browse the unique Mandarake store, which offers a range of rare and collectible items, from manga to vintage toys.

Day 8: Fushimi Inari Shrine

You’ll start the day with a visit to Higashi Hongan-ji temple, one of the biggest wooden structures in the world. It’s a peaceful spot to explore, and we’ll get there before the crowds arrive.  

After that, we’ll head to one of the most enduring images of Japan – the Fushimi Inari Shrine. Famous for the thousands of vibrant red torii gates, you can either hike to the top of the trail for beautiful mountain views of Kyoto, or head back into the city to grab some local street food.  

In the early afternoon, we’ll visit Kiyomizu-dera Temple, one of the most beautiful temples in Japan – and a UNESCO World Heritage site. You’ll then be shown around the Gion district by your Adventure Leader, before spending the evening at your leisure. You might: 

  • Wander through Pontocho Alley in the geisha district.  
  • Catch a performance at Gion Corner! 
  • Visit the Yasaka Shrine in the evening, when its beautifully illuminated with lanterns and lights.  

Day 9: Bamboo Forest & Nara Park

This morning, we’ll take a train to beautiful Nara for a half-day visit. While we’re there, we’ll visit the impressive Todaiji temple, home to one of the world’s largest bronze Buddha statues. We’ll also explore Nara Park, where you might just make friends with some of the friendly residents – deer!  

You’ll have time to grab lunch in Nara, before we head back to Kyoto. Once we’re back, the afternoon is yours. You can opt to: 

  • Experience a traditional tea ceremony with a real Geisha/Maiko. 
  • Explore the Arashiyama bamboo forest, the Tenryu-ji temple and gardens, and the monkey park. 
  • Rent a kimono to get a real taste of Japanese geisha culture! 
  • Visit the Pokémon Center, where keen fans can have a whole load of fun. 
  • Visit the Manga Museum, where you can dive into a key part of Japanese pop culture! 

Day 10: Kyoto to Hiroshima

We’re grabbing bikes this morning, and embarking on a half-day cycle tour of the city. We’ll first hop over to a Zen temple, where you’ll get a chance to unwind and discover your inner peace with a meditation led by a Buddhist monk. You’ll also get a chance to experience a traditional tea ceremony! 

We’ll then stop to grab lunch, before we visit an iconic destination in Kyoto – the Golden Pavilion at Kinkaku-ji! We’ll head past the Imperial Palace, before it’s time to head to our next destination.  

This afternoon, we’ll grab the bullet train bound for Hiroshima, arriving in time for dinner. You can opt to join your group for dinner at Okonomiyaki Village, where the chef will prepare your meal in front of you!

Day 11: Hiroshima & Miyajima Island

This morning, we’ll pay a visit to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and the Atomic Bomb dome, where you’ll get the chance to learn about an important part of Japanese history.  

Next, we’re hopping on a ferry over to Miyajima island, a stunning paradise just off the coast. While you’re here, you can head to see the Itsukushima Shrine – at low tide, you can walk over to stand underneath this huge torii gate.  

After grabbing yourself some lunch, we’re heading to the Miyajima Ropeway, where you’ll head up into the mountain to get some spectacular views of the island.  

We’ll transfer back into Hiroshima this evening, where there’ll be a chance for you to explore the city at your leisure.  

Day 12: Osaka

We’re grabbing the train bright and early, bound for our final destination – Osaka. After we’ve arrived, your Adventure Leader will take you on a short orientation walk of the city, ending up in the vibrant Shinsaibashi. This street is perfect for exploring – make sure you grab yourself some lunch! 

You’ll then have some free time to explore Osaka! You might: 

  • Explore Osaka Castle – a fascinating site which also offers stunning views of the city.  
  • Head to Umeda, where keen shoppers will find much to occupy them.  
  • Visit the National Museum of Art, where you can explore Japan’s rich history and culture through extensive exhibits.  

In the evening, you’ll head to Shinsekai for a Japan farewell dinner. While we’re here, we can visit the iconic Tsutenkaku Tower to grab a great photo outside. Finally, if you’d like to see Japan off in style, head back into Shinsaibashi with your group to grab a final drink.  

Day 13: Japan to South Korea!

Today, you'll make the journey from Japan to South Korea - where the next leg of your adventure begins! We'll drop you at the airport, where you'll transfer to Seoul. After checking into your accommodation here, you'll have the rest of the day to settle yourself and explore the city at your own leisure.

Day 14: Taekwondo, Cable Cars & Seoul Views

The Korean leg of your combo tour begins today! You’ll meet your new group and Adventure Leader in the afternoon and listen to a pre-departure briefing to learn everything you need to know about your trip, including some basic Korean phrases to help you along the way.

After this, it’s time for your first unmissable activity – a Taekwondo training session! Test your skills and see if you’ve got what it takes to be the best in class.

After working up an appetite, we’ll head back into Myeongdong for a special welcome dinner with your group. Enjoy a delicious first meal together, getting to know your fellow travellers and toasting to the start of an incredible adventure!

Next, you’ll make your way to the top of Namsan Mountain by cable car, where you can admire spectacular views of Seoul lit up at night. Recognised as the most popular location in Seoul for couples, wander through the ‘padlocks of love’ locked at the base of Seoul N Tower, representing visitors’ endless love! If you want an even better view of the city, you can head to the top of the Tower.

Later, take the cable car down and enjoy a walk back to your accommodation in the district of Myeongdong. Spend some time strolling around and exploring the area or grab an early night to prepare for your first full day tomorrow!

Day 15: Seoul Culture

This morning, we’ll get you up in time to head to our next unmissable experience – a trip to Gyeongbokgung Palace. We’ll arrive with time to watch the iconic Royal Guard Changing Ceremony take place, before heading to the hanbok rental store. Here, if you’d like to get the full experience, you can opt to rent these beautiful traditional Korean outfits before we head inside the Palace to explore.  

In the afternoon, you’ll have time to explore Seoul further at your own leisure. There’s plenty of areas you can discover under your own steam, including: 

  • Bukchon Hanok village, filled with winding alleys and traditional Korean architecture, as well as lots of local souvenir stores
  • Insadong Art Street – an art lover’s haven, filled with local handcraft and antiques stores
  • The Gangnam District, the city’s third-largest district and shopper’s paradise
  • The Han River – we’d recommend renting a bike and exploring this way!
  • HiKR Ground, a fascinating cultural center that K-wave lovers won’t want to miss. You can even try recording your own K-pop music video!
  • Alternatively, you could join some of your group for an optional cooking class, where you’ll learn to make makgeolli, a sparkling rice wine that’s a staple of Korea.

This evening, you can opt to join your group for dinner and drinks!

Day 16: DMZ & Nightlife

Today, you will visit the Korean Demilitarized Zone. Climb aboard a bus, taking you an hour north of Seoul to Imjingak, where you’ll have the chance to grab some breakfast. Pay a visit to Dora Observatory where you can see the nearest North Korean villages through binoculars. If you’re lucky, you might even see some people in the streets. Next, descent into the 3rd Tunnel created by North Koreans, taking you as close as 170m to North Korea! 

After, you will begin your journey back to Seoul and make the most of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to talk to a North Korean defector on the bus. Back in Seoul, try out a K-Pop Dance Class and then enjoy a night out in Hongdae, best known for its endless restaurant and bar options. 

Day 17: Sokcho Hikes, Villages & Food Markets

Check out of your accommodation and depart to Sokcho, in the north-eastern part of the country. Arriving at Seoraksan National Park in the late morning, embark on a rewarding hike to Ulsanbawi Rock, where you’ll be greeted with spectacular panoramic views. For those looking for a less challenging option, follow the well-signed waterfall trail and take a cable car to another scenic peak. After your hike, refuel with lunch at the entrance of the park before boarding the bus to Sokcho town, where you’ll hop on a gatbae to cross the river to Abai, a small village originally formed by North Korean refugees.

In the evening, follow your Adventure Leader on a food market tour, exploring Sokcho’s best culinary hotspots before heading into the local fish markets for dinner. Whether you choose fresh seafood straight from the market or opt for one of the town’s best-loved restaurants, such as Manseok, famous for its sticky sweet and sour boneless fried chicken, this is the perfect way to immerse yourself in Sokcho’s incredible food scene.

Later, round off the evening with a traditional liquor tasting, hosted by your Adventure Leader, to experience the flavours of Korea in a truly local way.

Day 18: Overnight Buddhist Temple Stay

This morning, we’ll transfer to our next destination: Gyeongju! On the way, we’ll take a quick stop at the BTS bus stop, where fans can grab an iconic photo! We’ll arrive at our unmissable accommodation experience at Golgulsa Temple in the early afternoon, where you’ll be staying overnight and getting a taste of life as a Buddhist monk.  

While you’re there, you’ll have an orientation, meditation class, communal work session, sunmudo training class, and a traditional Buddhist vegetarian dinner! 

Day 19: Explore Gyeongju

You’ll wake up in the temple this morning for a traditional Buddhist chanting and meditation session, before having an early breakfast. Following this, we’ll head back into Gyeongju, where you’ve got some free time to explore the city. You might want to: 

  • Visit the Bulguksa Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which now holds 7 of Korea’s national treasures. 
  • Head to a local tea-house for an authentic Korean tea experience. 
  • Pay a visit to the Gyeongju National Museum – the city is known as the historic heart of Korea, and you’ll find loads of fascinating artifacts from Korea’s history inside!  

Meet your group in the late afternoon, where you’ll jump on bikes – the best way to explore the city! Take a cycle tour of the city, stopping at the Cheonmachong Ancient Tombs in the Daereungwon Tumuli Park and Cheomseongdae Observatory along the way.  

This evening, if you’d like you can try a traditional Korean set meal at a local hanok! For those who’d like to carry on exploring, we’ll then take you to one of the most beautiful sites in Gyeongju, the Anapji (Wolji Pond), which is lit beautifully of an evening.  

Day 20: Travel to Busan

This morning, we’ll transfer onto the bustling city of Busan, arriving in the mid-morning. Jump on a private bus and get ready to see the sights! Our first stop is Gamcheon Culture Village, the iconic district filled with colourful houses that’s built into the city’s hillsides. From there, we’ll head to Songdo Beach, ready to jump on the marine cable car that takes you over the azure shoreline. We’ll then head into the vibrant BIFF Square, a well-known district that’s filled with entertainment and shopping options.  

This evening, you have some time to explore Busan at your own leisure. If you’re a seafood lover, why not try finding somewhere to try Busan’s specialty, snow crab?  

Day 21: Discover Busan

This morning, we’re off to the famous Haedong Yonggungsa Temple – while the majority of Korea’s temples are set in the hills, Haedong’s renowned for its cliffside position and stunning sea views.  

Back in the city, you’ve got a free afternoon to spend as you see fit. If you’re ready to slow down, we’d recommend spending the afternoon relaxing in a jjimjilbang – a traditional South Korean bathhouse.  

This evening, you can opt to join your group for a sightseeing boat trip into Busan harbour. You’ll get amazing views of Haeundae and the Gwangan Bridge, which is lit up by colourful LED lights to create a truly spectacular cityscape.  

For any keen singers, why not take the chance to challenge your group at karaoke?  

Day 22: Flight to Jeju Island

You have a day free ahead of your flight to Jeju Island in the late afternoon. If you’re a beach-lover, you might want to enjoy a picnic breakfast on the sand before dipping in for a swim or playing some volleyball. If you’re keen to get to grips with Korean cooking, you might opt to join us for a morning cooking class!  

There’s also plenty left to explore in the city, including: 

  • Haeundae Blueline Park, which has a charming monorail that takes you along the Busan coastline. 
  • Huinnyeoul Culture Village, a charming local district built into the coastline – you’d be forgiven for thinking that you’re in Mamma Mia!  

This afternoon, we’ll transfer to the airport and jump on a flight to Jeju Island, our final destination. Arriving in the evening, you can either spend some time unpacking and relaxing, or head straight out to explore the area.  

Day 23: Coastal Views, Waterfalls & Hikes

Wake up on the beautiful island of Jeju and start your day with a trek along the Jeju Olle Trail, soaking in iconic coastal views and serene natural surroundings. Next, visit Jeongbang Waterfall, the only waterfall in Asia that flows directly into the ocean – a breath-taking sight to complete your morning.

Then, hike to Seongsan Ilchulbong, a UNESCO World Heritage Site formed by hydrovolcanic eruptions over 5,000 years ago. After taking in the panoramic views, you can enjoy an optional lunch by the volcano or catch a Haenyeo performance at 13:30 (please note this performance is subject to availability/weather dependent). 

Returning to the hotel in the early afternoon, the rest of the day is yours to explore. You could: 

  • Head to Jungmun Beach to catch some rays 
  • Visit the beautiful Cheonjiyeon Waterfall 
  • Explore the Maritime Park and Saeyeongyo Bridge 

For a wonderful end to the day, opt to visit The Cliff for a drink with a truly special view of the sunset. 

Day 24: Yachts & Sunset BBQ's

Make the most of your second morning in the mesmerising Jeju by visiting the Daepo Jusangjeolli Cliffs, a striking volcanic rock formation shaped by nature over thousands of years. After taking in the dramatic coastal scenery, reboard the bus and head to the yacht sailing tour, where you’ll set sail on the open sea and relax in the fresh ocean air.

The afternoon is then yours to explore at your own pace – whether you choose to unwind, visit more of Jeju’s natural wonders, or ask our Adventure Leaders for their top recommendations. In the evening, gather for a farewell barbecue dinner, where you can sample Jeju’s famous black pork, watch the sun set over the island and, if you’re up for it, celebrate into the night by the seashore. Make the most of these final moments with your fellow travellers before saying annyeonghi gaseyo in the morning!

Day 25: Checkout & Onward Travel

Sadly, today marks the end of your Japan & South Korea Adventure Tour! Say goodbye to your new friends, and prepare to either head home or carry on adventuring solo.

Group sizes are a maximum of 20 people. While we get a huge range of people on this tour, we usually see that this tour is most popular for people in their early-20s to mid-30s.

1 breakfast and 5 dinners are included, as well as a sushi-making class!

Accommodation

24 nights of beautiful accommodation is included in the trip! You'll stay in a mix of clean and comfortable hostels, guesthouses and hotels across Japan and South Korea.

 

You'll also experience a unique stay in a traditional Ryokan in Japan, and a temple stay in South Korea!

Most of our optional activities can be booked during your trip, however, there are a couple that must be booked in advance to guarantee availability. They are listed below:

  • Tea Ceremony with a Geisha – £95 (please note that this is not available in March/April)

South Korea

  • Personalised perfume making class – £70

Arrival Information

We cannot book airport transfers in Japan - the best and most affordable way of getting to and from Tokyo airports, is by public transport. Our friendly experts can recommend the best way of reaching our hostels, depending on the airport you're flying in to, and you'll also get specific information on making your way to the accommodation in your Pre-Departure Booking Pack.

Requirements

Travel insurance for Japan and South Korea is compulsory to join the trip. Your group leader will ask for proof of this on the first day of the trip.

 

We recommend checking the official gov.uk website for up to date visa entry requirements. 

 

It’s also recommended to have onward travel booked out of South Korea before travelling there, as you may get asked for proof of this before boarding your flight. If you need any further help please contact us.

 

Please also let us know if you have any medical or dietary requirements so we can ensure everything is in place for you before you arrive!

After your Trip

Your Japan & South Korea Adventure will finish in Jeju Island. You can either carry on your travels in Jeju, or make your way back to Seoul - your Adventure Leader can help with this! Or you can contact us at info@gatewaygotravel.com.
