ITINERARY

Day 1: Hello Tokyo

Welcome to Tokyo! You'll meet your group in the afternoon for a trip briefing with your Adventure Leader, who will give you the lowdown on what to expect over the next few days, along with some handy tips for navigating Japan like a pro. From there it's straight into a welcome dinner with your group – the perfect way to break the ice and tuck into your very first taste of Japan’s incredible cuisine. In the evening, you can choose to keep the night going with your new travel crew at a local bar or take it easy and get some rest before the adventure begins in full swing tomorrow.

Day 2: Sushi Masterclass, Meiji Shrine, Harajuku & Shibuya

Today kicks off with one of our unmissable experiences – a hands-on sushi making class. Roll up your sleeves, master the art of sushi with the help of local experts and then feast on your creations for lunch.

In the afternoon we step into the calm of Meiji Shrine, one of Tokyo’s most iconic spots. Dedicated to Emperor Meiji, who defeated the samurai, brought an end to the shogunate and played a major role in modernising Japan.

Next stop: Harajuku. This is Tokyo’s fashion hub where anything goes, from technicolour hair to punk, goth and everything in between. Wander the lively backstreets, dig through quirky vintage shops and grab a bite at one of the area’s iconic eateries.

From there, it’s time to experience Shibuya Crossing, the busiest pedestrian intersection in the world. Thousands of people cross from every direction at once! It’s a sight you will not forget. While you’re there, make sure to spot the famous Hachiko statue.

Later this afternoon is yours to explore. Fancy something exhilarating? Try Kartoon Karting and zoom through Tokyo’s streets in a go kart for a one of a kind adventure.

Day 3: Yanaka Ginza, Akihabara, Sensoji Temple & Optional Sumo Feast

We begin the day at Yanaka Ginza, a charming retro shopping street packed with local stalls, quirky shops and tasty street eats. It is a great spot to soak up a slice of everyday Tokyo life.

From there we head to Akihabara, Japan’s legendary “Electric Town.” This neon playground is filled with gaming arcades, anime stores and gadget shops galore. Challenge your travel crew to a few friendly arcade battles! Afterwards, have a “Maid in Tokyo” experience at one of Akihabara’s famous maid cafes. A quirky, picture-perfect slice of Japanese pop culture.

Next up is the historic Asakusa district, home to the iconic Sensoji Temple. Stroll through Nakamise-dori street with its lively traditional stalls before stepping into the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo.

Afterwards, you can choose to take part in an unforgettable sumo experience. Here you can meet ex sumo wrestlers, learn about the sport’s traditions and tuck into a hearty chanko nabe dinner, the dish that fuels the wrestlers.

The evening is free to explore at your own pace. Ask your Adventure Leader for top tips or head to Hoppy Street for dinner, where lively izakayas and local drinks like doburoku give you a true taste of Tokyo nightlife.

Day 4: Mt Fuji, Arakura Hike & Oshino Hakkai Village

Today we leave the city behind and head out on a day trip packed with fresh air, epic views and traditional charm. Starting from Shinjuku Station, we catch the train to Shimoyoshida before hiking up to the beautiful Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine. With its iconic pagoda and backdrop of Mt Fuji on a clear day, it is one of the most photographed spots in all of Japan (and you’ll see why when you get there).

Next, a short public transport journey takes us to Oshino Hakkai, a traditional village in the Fuji Five Lakes region. This peaceful spot is famous for its crystal-clear ponds fed by Mt Fuji’s snowmelt, and you can wander through the old, thatched roof houses that feel like stepping back in time. If the skies are clear, you will even catch some epic views of Mt Fuji itself. We will stop here for lunch and have time to explore the village at your own pace.

(Please note: Mt Fuji visibility can vary depending on the weather.)

In the afternoon we’ll return to Tokyo, arriving in time for a free evening. It’s your last night in the city, so make it count – whether that means a final ramen stop, shopping spree or bar hopping with your travel crew.

Day 5: Shimoda Bay Cruise, Perry Road & Onsen Night

This morning we say goodbye to Tokyo and make our way to the coastal town of Shimoda. We stash our bags in lockers and travel light for our night in Shimoda. We’ll kick things off with the Shimoda Bay Sightseeing Cruise. This is a short boat ride that offers sweeping views of the coastline while you learn about the port’s fascinating history, and you might even feed birds from the back of the boat.

Back on land, we stroll along Perry Road, a stone paved street lined with traditional houses, cosy cafés and quirky shops. We will also stop by the Museum of Black Ships (MoBS), home to more than 3,000 original artefacts that tell the story of Japan’s transition from isolation to international trade. Nearby, we visit Ryosenji Temple, the quiet site where the Treaty of Shimoda was signed.

After some free time to wander, we take to the skies on the Shimoda Ropeway. From the top, enjoy a panoramic view of the city, coastline and mountains – and if the timing’s right, we might even catch a stunning sunset over the bay.

This evening we head to our accommodation in Shimoda, where you can round off the day with a blissful onsen experience. The perfect way to end your day!

Day 6: Kyoto Bound - Bullet Trains & Karaoke

This morning we say farewell to Shimoda and hop on the train to Atami. After some free time for lunch and a chance to explore this seaside city, we board the famous shinkansen (bullet train) bound for Kyoto.

On arrival, your Adventure Leader will take you on a short orientation walk to get your bearings and ease into the more tranquil vibe of Japan’s cultural capital.

In the evening it is time to swap zen for zany! Join your travel crew and belt out your favourite tunes at a classic Japanese karaoke spot. It is the perfect way to kick off your stay in Kyoto!

Day 7: Tea Ceremony, Temple & Gion Geisha Traditions

Today begins with the elegance and mindfulness of a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Watch as the instructor performs the rituals of preparing and serving matcha with care and precision, before trying your hand at whisking your own bowl of tea. Sweet treats are served alongside, and if you want to go all in, you can opt to rent a kimono for the full experience.

Next we head to Kiyomizu-dera, one of Japan’s most iconic Buddhist temples and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Take in the sweeping views from its wooden stage before enjoying some free time for lunch at the bustling shops around the temple.

In the afternoon, your Adventure Leader will guide you on a short walk through Gion, Kyoto’s famous geisha district filled with narrow lanes, tea houses and traditional wooden machiya. From there, the evening is yours to enjoy however you like – whether that means tasting your way through Nishiki Market, browsing Teramachi’s shops, checking out the Samurai Ninja Museum, or catching a performance at the GEAR non-verbal theatre.

Day 8: Kyoto Temples, Trails & Japanese Calligraphy

This morning is yours to enjoy Kyoto your way. Your Adventure Leader will be on hand if you need tips or support, but the choice is all yours. You could:

  • Stroll the Philosopher’s Path and admire the serene temples along the way.
  • Head west to Arashiyama for the famous bamboo grove, a hike up to Monkey Park or a visit to Tenryu ji Temple.
  • Take a trip to Nara to see the mighty Todaiji Temple and meet the friendly deer in Nara Park.
  • Opt for cultural experiences in Kyoto like another tea ceremony, a kimono rental, or a visit to the Ninja and Samurai Museum. Just remember Kyoto is hugely popular, especially during cherry blossom season, so book early to avoid missing out.

Or, if you would rather, simply ask your Adventure Leader for more suggestions to uncover hidden gems in the city or even beyond.

In the afternoon we regroup for a hands-on calligraphy class. Guided by a local teacher, you will learn the graceful art of Japanese brush writing and create your own keepsake to take home.

Day 9: Cycling, Meditation, Sights & Okonomiyaki Village

Today we hop on bikes and explore Kyoto like a local. Our half day ride takes us through the city’s quieter streets and leads to a serene Zen temple, where you will join a meditation session led by a Buddhist monk followed by a calming tea ceremony.

After your journey into tranquillity, we pause for a quick lunch before heading to one of Kyoto’s most iconic sights: the Golden Pavilion at Kinkaku ji. With its shimmering reflection in the surrounding pond, it is a view you will never forget.

This afternoon we swap pedals for speed as the bullet train whisks us further west to Hiroshima. After checking in at the hostel, take some time to rest before the evening’s option to join your group for dinner at Okonomiyaki Village. Here you can watch skilled chefs prepare Hiroshima’s signature dishes right in front of you.

Day 10: Miyajima Island, Mt Misen Ropeway & Hiroshima

This morning, we take a train and short ferry ride out to Miyajima Island, famous for its giant torii gate that appears to float in the sea. At low tide you can even walk across the sand to stand right beneath this iconic landmark.

Next, ride the Miyajima Ropeway up Mt Misen for incredible views over the island. You can choose to take the ropeway both ways or hike back down through the forest trails if you are feeling adventurous.

After some free time for lunch, we catch the ferry back to the mainland and pay a powerful visit to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and the Atomic Bomb Dome. It’s a moving experience that offers a deeper understanding of the city’s past and its message of peace.

We then return to the hostel in Hiroshima for a free evening to rest or explore at your own pace.

Day 11: Osaka Bound & Okayama Sights

This morning we hop on the bullet train from Hiroshima to Okayama, where our first stop is the Kurashiki Bikan Quarter. This beautifully preserved Edo period district is full of charm, with its canals, traditional streets and cosy cafés. Take your time to wander at your own pace, sample local sweets and browse the souvenir shops.

Next we head to Korakuen Garden, ranked as one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan. With its seasonal beauty and sweeping lawns, it offers a peaceful escape and a glimpse into Edo period.

After collecting our luggage at the station, we continue by shinkansen to Shin Osaka. Once we have dropped our bags, the evening is yours. You can rest up after a full day or head out to explore Shinsekai, Osaka’s retro entertainment district. Be sure to try one of the city’s best loved specialties – kushikatsu, skewered and deep-fried delights that are perfect for sharing with your new friends.

Day 12: Explore Osaka

This morning begins with a short orientation walk to Shinsaibashi, one of Osaka’s liveliest shopping streets. Take some time to wander and take it all in as well as grabbing some lunch at one of the countless local spots.

The rest of the afternoon is free for you to uncover Osaka at your own pace. You might choose to:

  • Explore the iconic Osaka Castle and enjoy sweeping city views from its tower.
  • Browse, shop and snack your way through Umeda’s buzzing streets.
  • Step into the National Museum to uncover more of Japan’s rich history and culture.

This evening we'll join together for a special farewell dinner. It's the perfect chance to share memories, swap photos and reflect on the unforgettable journey you have had across Japan with your travel crew.

Day 13: Check Out & Onward Travel
