Join a rewarding journey of professional development with our Medical Internship Program for Paramedics in Sri Lanka. Program Highlights:

  1. Clinical Rotations: Participate in clinical rotations across a variety of medical specialties, including emergency medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics, and internal medicine. Gain practical experience in diagnosing and treating patients under the supervision of experienced healthcare professionals.
  2. Hospital Observations: Shadow healthcare providers in hospital settings, observing medical procedures, patient consultations, and diagnostic tests. Learn about the healthcare system in Sri Lanka and the challenges faced in delivering quality medical care.
  3. Community Health Outreach: Engage in community health outreach initiatives, conducting health screenings, health education sessions, and preventive healthcare activities in rural and underserved areas. Contribute to efforts to improve access to healthcare and promote public health awareness.
  4. Cultural Immersion: Immerse yourself in Sri Lankan culture and traditions, participating in cultural activities, language classes, and cultural exchange events. Explore the rich history and vibrant heritage of Sri Lanka during your free time.

Responsibilities:

  1. Patient Care: Provide direct patient care under the supervision of licensed healthcare professionals, including taking vital signs, administering medications, and assisting with medical procedures.
  2. Documentation: Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records, including patient histories, treatment plans, and progress notes. Ensure compliance with patient confidentiality and data protection regulations.
  3. Education and Counseling: Educate patients and their families about their medical conditions, treatment options, and preventive healthcare measures. Provide counseling and emotional support to patients facing medical challenges.
  4. Community Outreach: Participate in community health outreach activities, including health screenings, immunization campaigns, and health education sessions. Collaborate with local healthcare providers and community organizations to address health disparities and promote health equity.

We offer a range of specialisation options tailored to your specific requirements:

  1. General Medicine: Rotate through diverse medical specialties within hospitals, clinics, and outpatient departments.
  2. Paediatrics: Gain hands-on experience in paediatric wards, outpatient clinics, and neonatal units, focusing on paediatric health issues.
  3. Surgery: Observe and assist in surgical procedures across various specialties.
  4. Obstetrics and Gynaecology: Concentrate on women's health, including prenatal care and gynecological procedures.
  5. Emergency Medicine: Acquire skills in emergency departments, responding to medical emergencies.
  6. Infectious Diseases: Explore common infectious diseases in Sri Lanka and participate in diagnosis and treatment efforts.

This Internship program runs all year round and starts every Monday. However, we recommend arriving on the Sunday to check into your accommodation and prepare for your program to start the following morning.

 

Please note that program start dates could be affected by local holidays. However, we will give you as much notice as possible if any days of your program may overlap with holidays.

 

The minimum duration of this Internship is 1 week.

Participants who register for a minimum of 2 weeks will be eligible to switch between 2 locations: Wattala and Galle. Participants have the option to stay in Galle for one week only, depending on your selected schedule.

What are the requirements to take part in this program?

Internship Requirements:

  • Age limit: 18-65
  • Proof of DBS check required
  • Proof of travel insurance required
  • Passport copy required
  • Copy of Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Academic qualifications in the field
  • An established background in an affiliated field of study

Internships may require an interview with either the local team or our team at Gateway Go Travel.

Working Hours

This program runs for a minimum of 1 week, starting on a Monday. You will work for around 4-5 hours per day / 20-25 hours per week.

Accommodation Details

You will stay in a beautiful homestay in Wattala, shared with up to 3 other participants.

 

If you also work at our Galle site, you will stay in resort styled accommodation with a small swimming pool.

What meals are included?

3 meals per day are included in your program, and there's also lots of restaurants around to visit if you fancy a change!

What can I do in my free time?

There are lots of amazing sites to see around Colombo, including the Lotus Tower, Pettah Markets, Port City (water sports, shopping, restaurants), Mount Lavinia beach, Galle Face Green, Independence Square, Gangaramaya Temple, Red Mosque and lots more!

 

Local transport is easily accessible from Colombo, so you can also take trips to other parts of Sri Lanka during your free time. 

 

If you're also working at our Galle site on the south coast of Sri Lanka, you'll have lots of beach towns on your doorstep to explore, as well as Galle Fort, Sri Lanka's famous World Heritage Site.

Airport Pickup

An airport pick up is included in your program fee, please let us know your arrival date, time and flight number, so that we can arrange to be there for your arrival. The drive from the airport to Wattala/Colombo can take around 45 minutes.

 

Transport between your accommodation and the volunteer site is not included. Local transport in Colombo is super easy to arrange yourself, or our local team will be happy to assist you with this.
