Many historic temples, schools, and community centres around Kandy are longing for a fresh start, and you can be part of their transformation! This project offers you the chance to help breathe new life into these cherished landmarks through hands-on activities like painting, restoring artwork, and light renovation.

 

You’ll contribute to improving schools and kindergartens, creating a welcoming and inspiring environment for children to learn and grow. From painting classrooms with educational murals to beautifying parks and other public spaces, your creativity will shine as you support the community.

Your Role

  • Cleaning and preparing the surroundings of historic sites.
  • Painting buildings and creating inspiring murals.
  • Contributing to temple artwork and decorative elements as requested.
  • Enhancing schools with educational posters and playful designs to inspire children.
    No prior experience? No problem! All you need is enthusiasm and a willingness to get your hands dirty.

 

  • Accommodation from Sunday until Saturday noon of the last week
  • Pick up upon your arrival during the regular pick-up time and transportation during the program as per the scheduled activities
  • Daily meals - 3 meals on weekdays and 2 meals on weekends

This volunteer program runs all year round and starts every Monday. However, we recommend arriving on the Sunday to check into your accommodation and prepare for your program to start the following morning.

 

Please note that program start dates could be affected by local holidays. However, we will give you as much notice as possible if any days of your program may overlap with holidays.

 

The minimum duration of this program is 1 week.

What are the requirements to take part in this program?

The following requirements are necessary in order for both the participants, local staff and everyone involved to have a meaningful, enjoyable and safe community program:

  • Minimum age: 18
  • Proof of DBS check required
  • Passport copy required
  • Proof of travel insurance required
  • You don't need any qualifications or to have experience in constructions, but do consider this job requires physical strength and endurance in hot weather conditions.
  • High level of efficiency, accuracy, responsibility, team player, and ability to work under pressure
  • Excellent time management and organisation skills, and a strong desire to take on new challenges and learn as much as possible!

 

How many days and hours will I work?

You will work 4-5 hours per day Monday-Friday.

 

Monday to Friday

  • Breakfast: Start your day with a hearty meal.
  • Morning: Dive into light renovation and construction work.
  • Lunch: Recharge with a delicious Sri Lankan meal.
  • Afternoon: Continue with renovation efforts, including painting, cleaning, or creating artwork.
  • Dinner: Wind down and enjoy a relaxing evening with fellow volunteers.

 

Your daily tasks may include:

  • Cleaning and preparing sites.
  • Painting buildings and classrooms.
  • Engaging in mural and temple artwork (based on requests).

What is the accommodation like?

During your stay, you will be accommodated in one of our residential centres located approximately 4 kilometres from Kandy city centre. The setting is simple and peaceful, providing a comfortable base during your program. 

 

Standard rooms will be shared with between 4-10 other participants, and there will also be a shared bathroom.

 

There is a refrigerator which you are welcome to use to store food and drinks. Safety lockers are available to store your belongings.

 

The house is located a few kilometres away from the city centre, where you can find anything you might need. The nearest ATM and supermarket are located a 15 minute walk away from the accommodation.

What meals are included?

You will be provided with three meals a day on weekdays and two meals per day on weekends. The meals are a mix of Western and Sri Lankan food, consisting mainly of vegetarian dishes including rice and vegetables. You are also free to eat out at any of the local restaurants! Tea, coffee and water is also included at your accommodation.

What can I do in my free time?

Kandy is a beautiful area in central Sri Lanka and there are many activities around to do in your free time. The Temple of the Tooth is a main attraction in Kandy along with being the base for the famous Kandy-Ella train ride. Other attractions include the Royal Botanical Gardens, Knuckles Mountain Range and Horton Plains.

Is there a dress code?

  • Modest working clothes particularly if your placement takes place at the temples.
  • Whenever you go into a school premises or during your placement, shoulders and knees must be covered.
  • The locals do tend to dress more conservatively, the safest choice of clothes to bring is "smart casual” as a great compliment and a sign of respect for their culture.
  • Comfortable sandals are a must, and should be easy to take off as most Sri Lankans do not wear shoes indoors.
  • Comfortable working clothes that you don't mind getting dirty and wet 
  • Bring a hat and sunglasses to protect from the heat, particularly during the construction activities.
  • Please also bring work gloves and sturdy shoes or boots, as you may take part in some heavy construction tasks.

Airport Pickup

An airport pick up is included on Sundays between 05:00-21:00. We recommend booking your flights to arrive during this pickup window.

 

If you're unable to make the pickup window, please contact us to let us know that you can make your own way to us, or arrange an additional pickup at an extra cost.

 

The arrival airport is CMB (Bandaranayake International Airport). The drive to your accommodation from the airport is around 4 hours.
